Cottontails (Sylvilagus floridanus) are a family of Rabbits containing some of the most familiar of the species in the world. Their nests are frequently built in vacant burrows or in the shelter of brush heaps or thickets.
In this watercolor, a baby cottontail is seen on his first sojourn out of the nest, which is farther back in the dense undergrowth. The lush summer foliage is too tasty and curiosity is too overwhelming to keep this bunny from remaining in the safety of the thicket any longer.
