This artwork represents a scene from the summer countryside near the historic village of Hopewell in southern Chester County. The gray mare is certainly not what she used to be, proven by the unharnessed, dilapidated condition in which the aging wagon exists.
Soft green grass contrasts with cool dark shadows, as bright sunshine drenches the field. What more could a retiring equine wish, other than an apple tree to replace the locust near the wagon.
